Dick Smith sadly passed away last week. As the godfather to the make-up world, and after inspiring so many artists to enter this industry, it only seemed right to dedicate an article to Dick and his incredible career.
Smith’s most famous work includes films such as Little Big Man, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver, and Scanners. He won a 1985 Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for his work on Amadeus and received a 2012 Academy Honorary Award for his career’s work.
Dick was born in New York, and at first had intentions of becoming a dentist studying pre-med at Yale university. His interest in makeup first started after he read a book on theatrical make-up techniques entitled ‘Paint, Paste and Makeup’ this changed his career path forever.
